Psychotherapy is a specialist talking treatment which helps people to explore their lives in order to understand and work through emotional and psychological problems. It challenges habitual defences and ways of thinking and is therefore a demanding rather than only supportive treatment.
Types of therapy provided:
- Individual brief and medium term psychotherapy
- Group therapy: usually 8-10 members
- Cognitive-analytic therapy (very limited)
Length of Therapy
Individual psychotherapy consists of weekly sessions that are for 50 minutes. Most commonly the course of psychotherapy will be for a fixed period.
Group psychotherapy consists of weekly sessions lasting 1½ hours. It is a long-term therapy with the average being 2-3 years or longer.
