Service Description
Our eating disorders services are currently provided by a specialist team which covers two key localities, West Surrey (including Hampshire Borders) and East Surrey, and day care is available at the Albert Suite, Farnham Road Hospital in Guildford.
A triage assessment system operates to keep waiting times down. Although staff are nominally linked to a specific locality, staff work flexibly across the Trust area to ensure individual and group therapy is provided equitably.
Our aim is to offer a high quality service to adults (age 18+) who suffer from Anorexia Nervosa or moderate to severe forms of Bulimia Nervosa. Limited input will be offered to clients with Binge Eating Disorder, usually a group. Referrals of young people aged below 18 years should be addressed to CAMHS.
Mental Health Crisis Support
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or emotional distress you can contact our Mental Health Crisis Helpline on 0800 915 4644. We are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for mental health advice and support. More information at www.sabp.nhs.uk/help
People with speech or hearing difficulties can access the mental health crisis line by:
- Dialling us through the BT Relay App or Textphone: 18001 0800 915 4644. More information at www.relayuk.bt.com
- Sending an SMS text to 07717 989 024 (Please note this service is only available to adults aged 18 years and over).
Referral Process
We accept referrals from GPs and Surrey and Borders clinicians. It helps us if baseline blood tests and ECG results are made available, plus height and weight and frequency of behaviour in the referral letter.
Referral Criteria
People should be stable before being accepted for care by us - we will offer consultation and advice during acute phases of medical or psychiatric disturbance, but will not be actively involved in treatment until the person is stable.
We are not a service for people who are obese and want to lose weight. If a person is referred to us for help with over-eating, we are likely to recommend they are referred to a local weight management service to support them with healthy weight loss.
People with binge eating disorder may be offered an evidence-based group recovery programme based on CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). This is an eight-week Managing Binge Eating course which is run by our psychologists and has no upper BMI threshold.
We are happy to discuss any potential referrals on the telephone.
